LYRA Art Design 669

A German pencil company LYRA, has been established in 1806.

However, this traditional pencil maker doesn't seem a huge worldwide stationery maker like STAEDTLER or Faber-Castell. Especially in Korea, products of this company is very hardly found.

Today's review item is Art Design 669, which is on the 'creative-line'.

Though Japanese pencil manufactures like Tombow and Mitsu-bish classify their products into several grades and package the high grade pencils with gaudy cases, German pencil makers are very modest in that aspect.

Mars Lumograph of STAEDTLER is an example, and so is LYRA Art Design 669.

The design of pencil box is quite simple.

I guess following is older version, and it's much simpler!

Well, I prefer newer design. I don't feel any artistic or well-designed point from older version box.

Let's look into the box.

Caps are broken. Almost all of them are cracked.

Of course, cracked-cap is occasionally found among high-grade pencil like Mars Lumograph of STAEDTLER. Well, but 10 of 12 is ridiculous. This is not 'The German pencil'.

After test writing, I was very disappointed in Art Design 669 and LYRA.

I have 4 grades from total 17 hardness of LYRA Art Design 669. As a practical writer, I bought H, F, HB and B Grades. Test writing was done on Rhodia 80g/㎡ paper, with the order of H, F, HB and B.

As you can see from above image, the test of F grade looks a bit weird. It's much darker than HB and almost same as B grade.

Here are comparisons of each hardness grades of LYRA Art Design 669 pencils to hardness grade of STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph.

HB hardness of LYRA Art Design 669 is a little bit lighter than STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph F.

B hardness of LYRA Art Design 669 is similar with STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph B.

I have no idea how to explain hardness of LYRA Art Design 669. I doubt it's for artists and designers.

Although the hardness system of this pencil is queer, the lead is not bad, but very good. Never scratchy, never crumble. I feel it's harder than STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph of same darkness. It reacts well, I feel more friction than expected.

The wood and barrel finish are not bad as high quality pencil. and the black and white attract me. If you have enough information of its hardness system, I won't stop you to buy one.
